Trader Joe’s just released two new varieties of cookie dough: Super Chocolatey Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough and Super Chocolatey Gluten Free Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough (a mouthful, literally). If you’re like, wait, didn’t Trader Joe’s cookie dough already exist, the answer is yes, but it wasn’t good. I’m sorry, but it’s true. It had a weird taste and texture. Is Trader Joe’s latest foray into ready-to-bake cookie dough better? We cranked up the oven and tried both versions of these new Trader Joe’s cookies to find out if they can compete with the heavy hitters of the cookie dough world. Read on to find out if this Trader Joe’s cookie dough should be baked, eaten raw, or left on TJ’s shelves.

Trader Joe’s Chocolatey Chocolate Chunky Cookie DoughThese hunks of Trader Joe’s cookie dough look pretty classic. Visually, they’re not far off from what you’d get from Pillsbury or Nestlé. And I’m pleased to report that they taste that good, too.
Pros: Trader Joe’s Super Chocolatey Chocolate Chunk cookies cook up beautifully. They look like cookies you’d get in a coffee shop that looks way better than they taste, except these actually taste good! They claim to be “super chocolatey” and they actually live up to the label. There are big hunks of chocolate throughout the dough. If you served me one of these next to a place-and-bake cookie from any other popular company, I don’t know if I could tell the difference.
Cons: I do not think this cookie dough is good raw. It tastes too much like alcohol-forward vanilla extract. I know they tell you on the package not to eat them raw, but c’mon. Everybody eats the cookie dough raw!

Super Chocolatey Gluten Free Chocolate Chunk Cookie DoughTrader Joe’sFinding good Gluten free cookie dough is rough. Finding good gluten free baked goods in general is rough! I figured these would taste bad and have a horrible texture, but I was wrong. Yay!
Pros: This dough makes a great gluten free cookie! There is tons of chocolate and the cookie surrounding the chunks has a pleasant taste as well. The texture is different from a normal cookie, but not bad. It’s a little cakier. Also, this actually tastes good in cookie dough form. Don’t eat the dough, though, because they say not to (wink wink).
Cons: I do miss the chewiness of a classic cookie when I eat these. While the cake-like texture is fun and interesting and tasty in its own way, I wish these replicated a classic place-and-bake cookie. It’s hard to find that in a gluten free cookie and I guess I’ll have to keep looking.
